Bridges

A bridge is a fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth. It comprises two crowns, one on each tooth on either side of the gap and a false tooth in between. The false tooth called a pontic, can be made from various materials, including gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination thereof. The bridge is cemented to the teeth on either side and is not removable.

Dental bridges are custom-made for each patient at Violet Akhondzadeh, D.D.S., FICO, INC. First, the dentist v prepares the teeth on either side of the gap by removing a portion of the enamel to make room for the crowns. Then, impressions of your teeth are taken and sent to the lab, where the bridge will be fabricated. When the bridge is ready, it is cemented into place.

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Dental Bridges

The most common type of bridge is the traditional one. It consists of two crowns for the anchoring teeth and an artificial tooth or in between. The artificial tooth is called a pontic. The bridge is held in place by cementation or bonding it to the surrounding teeth.

Cantilever Bridges

This type of bridge is used when there is only one natural tooth next to the missing tooth. It’s held in place by a dental crown on the adjacent tooth.

Maryland Bridges

These bridges are also known as resin-bonded bridges. They are used when natural teeth are on both sides of the gap. Instead of a crown, a metal framework is attached to the backs of the abutment teeth. This metal framework holds the false tooth in place.

Implant-Supported Bridges

An implant-supported bridge uses dental implants instead of crowns to support the pontic. Two implants are placed in the jawbone, and the pontic is attached between them.
